About the painting: This evocative portrait of the late MICHAEL HUTCHENCE juxtaposes Hutchence's dark vulnerability with his seductive brilliance. It was inspired by the INXS lyrics: "So bright and shiny golden and silver that it shatters the sun". One of the images on this page features artist Barry Novis with a framed print of his Michael Hutchence painting which has become part of his personal collection.

About Michael Hutchence:
Rock legend Michael Hutchence was an Australian musician, singer-songwriter, actor and co-founder of the rock band INXS which sold over 60 million records worldwide. He was the lead singer and lyricist of INXS from 1977 until his death in November 1997.

The album Kick provided INXS with international success and spawned four US Top 10 singles: New Sensation, Never Tear Us Apart, Devil Inside and Need You Tonight. In 1988 INXS dominated the MTV Video Music Awards, the Need You Tonight/Mediate video winning in five categories. A year later Michael Hutchence collaborated on the Max Q project, releasing a self-titled album and three singles: Way of the World, Sometimes and Monday Night by Satellite. INXS released X, with its worldwide hits Suicide Blonde and Disappear, in 1990. The following year, Michael Hutchence won the 'Best International Artist' at the BRIT Awards; INXS won the related group award. Welcome to Wherever You Are, which was released by INXS in August 1992, was another monster hit which went to No. 1 in the UK.

A charismatic performer, with a voice described as a "seductive purr", Michael Hutchence is considered one of the greatest Australian singers of all time.
