The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a playful dog colloquially known as the Staffy. Despite their tough appearance, Staffies are actually very loving and clever, often known as “the nanny dog” due to their dedication to their family’s children. They are neither shy nor aggressive, and seem to love people, but they don’t always do well with other dogs due to their dog-fighting heritage. They love exercise and play, and are known to jump high fences or dig underneath one, just for the fun of it. They’re smart, but stubborn and independent, which makes creative training imperative.

Barry Novis painted Groover after meeting a funny, friendly Staffy during one of his walks around Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The stud in his tongue, and the name “Groover”, were inspired by the dog’s cheeky and irreverent attitude.
